A 28-year-old woman battling a life-threatening brain aneurysm has been successfully treated day before yesterday at Agartala Government medical college and GB Pant Hospital, Agartala, by Dr. Abirlal Nath and his neuro team, in what stands as a major achievement for Tripura’s public healthcare system.
Initially, the patient's family was reluctant to accept the treatment plan proposed by Dr. Nath, which involved a Digital Subtraction Angiography (DSA) followed by coiling. They asked whether medication alone could help and demanded a 100% guarantee, before proceeding. Dr. Nath responded calmly, “I’m a doctor, not God… but I will do my best," He said.
The family decided to take the patient to CMC Vellore, where doctors gave the exact same advice
that DSA was urgently needed. Upon returning to Tripura, the family approached Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha for a referral outside the state. The Chief Minister and Health Secretary Kiran Gitte, IAS assured them that the required treatment could be done by Dr. Nath at GB itself.
As the patient suffered a third brain hemorrhage, time became critical. Dr. Nath insisted on immediate DSA, assuring the family that coiling would be done completely free of cost under the Ayushman Bharat scheme.
Upon conducting the DSA, a large aneurysm was detected deep within the brain. A specialized team performed the complex coiling procedure. The aneurysm was sealed successfully, and the patient stabilized.
After the successful surgery, the patient’s mother and sisters broke down in tears and hugged Dr. Nath in gratitude. They admitted that their trust in GB Hospital had been restored. The case was later reported to the hospital director and the health secretary.
“This is not just a story of medical success in Agartala medical college and GBP Hospital, it’s a story of trust, patience, and persistent effort,” said Dr. Nath in a heartfelt social media post. “Building neurointervention in Tripura is still a long battle, but saving this young woman’s life made it feel worthwhile", he said.
The patient, now stable, is expected to recover and begin a new chapter in life.
