Discussion Held on Future Tax Prospects and Development Issues by 6th State Finance Commission at Belonia

A high-level discussion meeting on the 6th State Finance Commission was held on Wednesday at the conference hall of the Belonia Circuit House. The session was chaired by Abhishek Singh, IAS, Chairman of the 6th State Finance Commission.

South Tripura District Magistrate Mohammad Sajjad P, Zilla Sabhadhipati Deepak Dutta, Deputy Sabhadhipati Tapan Debnath, Member Secretary of the Finance Commission, Directors of RD and Urban Development Departments, Sub-Divisional Magistrates, Chairpersons of various Panchayat Samitis, Municipal Council Chairpersons, Zilla Parishad members, and heads of various Gram Panchayats were present at the meeting.

The conference brought together representatives from different levels of Panchayati Raj institutions , Gram Panchayats, Panchayat Samitis, BDOs, Zilla Parishads, Nagar Panchayats, and Municipal Councils. Chairman Abhishek Singh emphasized the importance of tax collection and initiated discussions on potential areas for tax imposition over the next five years.

Following his presentation, local elected representatives highlighted the progress and shortcomings of ongoing development projects and placed new proposals for future works. They also discussed challenges faced in tax collection processes.

At the end of the meeting, Zilla Sabhadhipati Deepak Dutta and Deputy Sabhadhipati submitted a memorandum on behalf of the district Zilla Parishad, proposing several development initiatives in public interest. The District Magistrate felicitated the Finance Commission Chairman and senior officials from the RD and Urban Development departments.

When asked by journalists whether tax rates would be increased, Chairman Abhishek Singh clarified that tax-related decisions are solely under the jurisdiction of the Panchayat bodies. He stated that any revision in tax rates would be based on people’s paying capacity and would not be determined by the Finance Commission or the State Government.
