The system of co-education with boys and girls attending classes together had been introduced long ago to ensure attendance in classes and keep up interest of students in the institutions of their academic studies. But in the changed circumstances and social realities of the present age this is turning out to be a source of major problems.

This sad fact is borne out by what happened in the Dharma Nagar government college on last Monday when the majority of students-both boys and girls had been away from classes to attend another programme. Taking advantage of the absence of other students from classes a boy and a girl student remained in their class room for an intimate chat but as they were locked in a close embrace , a girl student came across the duo and reported the matter to other students .

Stirred by what they had been told a number of students rushed to the desolate class room and caught the duo in a compromising position. This created a furore and the boy and girl, backed by some of their mates , became ballistic . Two different groups formed and in an attack by the supporters of the caught boy and girl two girl students , identified as Sagarika De and Rakhi Shukla-Baidya, were injured and had to be shifted to hospital . Even though the injuries Sagarika and Rakhi had sustained were minor the Akhil Bharatiay Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) unit of the college came out in protest against the immoral activities of the college. The office bearers of the ABVP in the college condemned the prohibitively close contact between boys and girls and said that proper discipline and decorum must be maintained in the college .

The college authority , in stead of taking drastic action, has instituted an internal inquiry while a complaint has also been filed with the police. Police sources said that the whole issue including the complaint would be properly investigated and action taken on the complaint.
