Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha on Sunday announced the introduction of a witness protection scheme in line with the new criminal laws, aimed at making the justice system more inclusive and secure. Speaking at a workshop on the investigation and prosecution of NDPS and new criminal law cases, Dr. Saha emphasized the need to overcome societal stigma that deters victims and witnesses from participating in legal proceedings.
He stressed the importance of robust monitoring and implementation of the reforms, echoing the directives issued by Union Home Minister Amit Shah during a meeting with northeastern states. “Our system must be more accessible and citizen-focused,” said Dr. Saha, highlighting provisions such as the right to file Zero FIRs at any police station and entitlement to free copies of FIRs and related documents.
For crimes against women, especially minors and those with disabilities, the Chief Minister directed that statements be recorded by a woman magistrate, with medical reports completed within seven days. He also called for video recording of evidence collection to prevent tampering.
Dr. Saha reminded that arrest does not mean conviction and urged investigators to prioritize accuracy. He welcomed the provision for trial in absentia, ensuring justice even when accused persons abscond.
