Newspaper packet looted by ‘Rashtrawadi’ miscreants in Belonia , one arrested , Agartala Press Club condemns

Restarting from where they had left off, a gang of so-called ‘Rashtrawadi’ miscreants looted packets containing five hundred copies of Agartala based daily newspaper ‘Pratibadi Kalam’ as part of an attempt to stop the circulation of the newspaper in Belonia. According to the version of the incident given by the newspaper authority, shortly after the morning bus had reached Belonia bus station yesterday in the morning a gang of 10/12 ‘Rashtrawadi’ miscreants led by Soham Saha snatched the newspaper packets containing five hundred copies and declared that ‘Pratibadi Kalam’ newspaper would not be allowed to circulate in Belonia.

The incident sparked a public outrage including among newspaper readers and social media was agog with video and audio clips of the shameful incident. The editor of the newspaper Anal Roychowdhury filed a zero FIR with the West Agartala police station , demanding drastic action against the culprits involved in the incident. It has been reported by the ‘Pratibadi Kalam’ today that following a tough stand taken by the chief minister Dr Manik Saha the mastermind behind the incident Soham Saha was arrested even as the police is on the look-out for his accomplices.

The Agartala Press Club, apex media body in the state as well as Tripura Working Journalist Association (TWJA) have strongly condemned the assault on media manifested in the looting of newspaper packets and urged upon the state government to take drastic action and prevent recurrence of such incidents in future. The secretary of Agartala Press Club Romakant De and secretary of TWJA Sunil Bhowmik in statements have reminded that media had come under attack repeatedly between 2018 and May 2022 and packets of ‘Pratibadi Kalam’ had been looted in Udaipur also. Besides, on September 8 2021 the office of the ‘Pratibadi Kalam’ had been vandalised and urged upon the state government to ensure safe and smooth functioning of the media here without any attack.
