In a significant development, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has officially invited the regional political party Tipra Motha for a discussion on the pressing issue of illegal migration from Bangladesh to Tripura. The meeting is scheduled to be held on 23rd July, marking what Tipra Motha founder and royal scion Pradyot Kishore Debbarma has termed a “huge victory” for their sustained campaign on the matter.
Pradyot shared the update via his official Facebook page, asserting that the ECI’s invitation validates the concerns repeatedly raised by his party over the demographic and security implications of unchecked cross-border migration.
Reacting to the development, Pradyot wrote:
> “My only answer to all those who continue to criticise us — at least we are trying to protect our next generation and looking beyond party politics. This is not just a fight of Tipra Motha party but every Indian.”
He also made a passionate appeal to rise above party politics and stand united against illegal migration, emphasizing the need for a collective and nationalistic approach to the issue rather than treating it as a political agenda.
However, while the party has secured a date with the Election Commission, Pradyot remains notably silent on any confirmed meeting date with Union Home Minister Amit Shah, despite the fact that a number of unresolved issues remain pending as per the understanding reached with the Central Government earlier this year.
The Tipra Motha founder has consistently voiced his demand for constitutional rights for the indigenous people of Tripura and has pushed for action on several fronts, including land rights, administrative reforms, and protection of cultural identity, which he says have been overlooked for decades.
With the ECI now stepping in to address one of Tipra Motha’s key concerns, political observers are watching closely to see whether this paves the way for a broader national dialogue on the issue of illegal migration in Tripura.
