Facing a pincer attack from the coalition partner ‘Tipra Moth’ the state BJP’s top leadership yesterday held a high level meeting with leaders of the party’s tribal front organization ‘Jana Jati Morcha’, tribal MLAs, BJP’s ADC members and senior leaders like former MP Rebati Tripura. For the BJP the meeting was attended by chief minister Dr Manik Saha , incumbent state president Rajeev Bhattacharjee and several others including tribal welfare minister Bikash Debbarma.
The meeting was held in the context of upcoming elections to the ADC next year and pressure politics of ‘Tipra Motha’ for extracting concessions. Addressing the meeting the chief minister Dr Manik Saha said that BJP is the largest political party not only in India but also in the world in terms of membership and support base. “We have already established our credentials as a party committed to the welfare of all depressed sections of people including scheduled castes, scheduled tribes , OBCs , Dalits and others ; in Tripura also we have already done a lot for the depressed communities including the tribals ; we have to transmit this message and earn greater support from the tribal people who extended support to us in the last two assembly elections as well as in the ADC election; we must therefore intensify our organizational drive among the tribals , a large percentage of whom are keen to remain with and join the BJP” said chief minister Dr Manik Saha.
The chief minister did not name any party but expressed his reservations over the recent political posturing and maneuvers of ‘Tipra Motha’ to put the BJP under pressure in spite of sharing power with them. Speaking on the issue the BJP state president Rajeev Bhattacharjee also read out a long list of steps implemented by the BJP to preserve and protect tribal identity as well as to ensure their economic well being . “Adequate funds are being provided by the state government to the ADC but the utilization of such funds leaves a lot to be desired; what we have already done and what we are doing now must be taken to the knowledge of the tribal people and in this regard our ‘Jana Jati Morcha’ has to take the responsibility ; the party will back them to the hilt and our job has to begin immediately” said Rajeev. Former MP and ‘Jana Jati Morcha’ leader Rebati Tripura also asserted that the ‘Morcha’ is ready to swing into political action to strengthen the party’s base in the tribal dominated areas. He said that very soon a massive programme will be launched.
