Ahead of the 2026 Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) elections, both the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its ally, the Indigenous People's Front of Tripura (IPFT), held separate strategic meetings in Agartala on Thursday.
The BJP’s ‘Chintan Baithak’ focused on boosting its grassroots presence and finalising poll strategies, with special emphasis on Janajati welfare. Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha, BJP state president Rajib Bhattacharjee, and senior tribal leaders including Tribal Welfare Minister Bikash Debbarma participated. Dr Saha underlined the government's commitment to improving socio-economic conditions for the state’s 31% Janajati population, with focus on education, health, infrastructure, and livelihood. The welfare of all 20 recognised tribal communities, including the Darlong, was a key agenda.
Meanwhile, the IPFT held a separate meeting, signalling its intent to contest the ADC polls with fresh momentum after setbacks in 2021. Cooperation Minister Shukla Charan Noatia noted a revival within the party, with former leaders returning. IPFT president Prem Kumar Reang reaffirmed the party’s core demand for a separate state under the Sixth Schedule, stating the BJP alliance is political, not ideological. He pledged to continue raising indigenous issues constitutionally.
With Tipra Motha currently in control of the ADC, which covers 75% of Tripura’s land, the 2026 elections are expected to be a high-stakes contest. Both BJP and IPFT are now ramping up outreach efforts and welfare initiatives in tribal regions.
