Violence gripped Gopalganj, the hometown of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina m, on Wednesday after fierce clashes erupted during a National Citizens Party (NCP) rally, leading to the deaths of four people and injuries to over 15 others. Authorities have since imposed a curfew across the district to regain control.

According to The Dhaka Tribune, the deceased were identified as Dipto Saha (25), Ramzan Kazi (18), Sohel Rana (30), and Imon (24). The violence reportedly broke out at multiple points in Gopalganj town, including in front of Gopalganj Government College and the municipal park area. The rally, organized by the NCP, descended into chaos when the party’s motorcade came under attack around 2:30 pm, shortly after concluding the event.

Dr. Jibitesh Biswas, superintendent of Gopalganj General Hospital, confirmed the fatalities and noted that three of the injured remain in critical condition.

As per The Daily Star, District Commissioner Md Kamruzzaman enforced Section 144 from 8:00 pm on Wednesday till 6:00 pm today to curb further unrest. In the wake of the curfew, crucial exams including HSC, Alim, and HSC (Vocational) scheduled in the district have been postponed.

The NCP held similar rallies in Chattogram and Noakhali, condemning the attack. Speaking from Khulna, NCP Convener Nahid Islam alleged that the assault on the motorcade was premeditated and aimed at eliminating him. “After concluding our rally in Gopalganj, we were heading to Madaripur when armed goons of the Awami League attacked our motorcade,” Nahid claimed.

Reacting strongly, the office of Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus denounced the incident, calling it an “utterly indefensible” act of political violence and promised justice for the victims.

The NCP is expected to continue its protest programme with a fresh rally in Faridpur today. Meanwhile, tensions remain high in Gopalganj, with heavy security deployment and continued political condemnation from opposition parties, including BNP.
