Havoc wreaked by so-called smart metre in Khowai, one person slapped bill of Rs 82 thousand, another given bill of Rs 31 thousand

Amidst statewide outrage and protest over installation of smart metres for power consumption bills , the wonders worked by so-called smart metres have already come to light in Khowai subdivision. The Khowai subdivision has already been covered by installation of smart metres in many households but bills yielded by the so-called smart metres have already turned out to be bolts from the blue for house-holders in a number of cases.

Sources from Khowai said that retired government employee Pramesh Bhattacharjee who lives in the heart of Khowai town has received a bill of whopping Rs 82.500 thousand for the month of June while Ashok Das Roy of Lalcherra near Khowai town has been slapped a bill of Rs 31 thousand for the same period . “The bills are totally inconsistent with the amount of power consumed in the two households and also with the power-consuming apparatus in their houses” sources said.

Shell-shocked by the exorbitant bills yielded by the smart metres both Pramesh Bhattacharjee and Ashok Dasroy have tried to meet and speak to the senior manager of TSECL Dibakar Nath but the senior manager has gone into hiding and is incommunicado. Sources said that both the over-charged consumers have decided to move higher authority in the TSECL and in case their attempt fails , they will move the consumer court and even the high court unless their grievance is satisfactorily redressed .
