In a letter addressed to the Prime Minister of India, Tripura Legislative Assembly member Ranjit Debbarma has urged the Central Government to honor the legacy of Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya Bahadur by renaming a road in New Delhi in his name. The MLA has also requested the installation of a statue of the late Maharaja and the establishment of a replica of the revered Tripureswari Temple and the Chaturdas Devta Mandir inside the Indian National Museum in Delhi.
The letter, dated July 14, 2025, emphasizes the historical significance of Maharaja Bir Bikram’s role in merging the Princely State of Tripura with the Indian Union. It also recalls the contributions of Queen Maharani Kanchanprava Devi, who signed the Merger Agreement on 9th September 1949.
Ranjit Debbarma noted that a road in Delhi has already been named after Tikendrajit Singh of the Manipur kingdom and proposed that a similar honor be extended to Tripura’s last Maharaja by naming a road Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya Bahadur Marg.
The MLA’s proposal includes the setting up of symbolic replicas of Tripura’s cultural and spiritual heritage, particularly the Tripureswari Temple of Udaipur and the Chaturdas Devta Mandir of Khayerpur, representing the deep-rooted faith of the people of Tripura across religious lines.
The letter has also been copied to the Chief Minister of Delhi for necessary support and coordination.
