Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha today emphasized the urgent need for widespread grassroots-level awareness to combat the genetic disorder Thalassemia, a disease that continues to impact hundreds across Tripura. Speaking at an awareness programme held at Rabindra Centenary Hall, the Chief Minister called upon citizens, organizations, and health professionals to join hands in preventing the spread of this hereditary condition through regular screening and public education.
Tripura has already identified 2,858 Thalassemia patients, reflecting the need for stronger preventive strategies and early diagnosis. With no known cure for Thalassemia, prevention through genetic screening and mass awareness remains the most effective solution.
Among the many organizations stepping forward in this cause, Rotary Club of Agartala has emerged as a leading name. Known for its diverse welfare initiatives, the club has now taken a proactive role in raising awareness about Thalassemia. Through organizing awareness camps, Rotary is working closely with healthcare professionals and volunteers to educate the public, especially youths and prospective parents, about the importance of pre-marital blood testing and genetic counseling.
In his address, Dr. Saha praised the efforts of such organizations and reiterated the government's commitment to supporting initiatives that help reduce the incidence of genetic diseases in the state. He stressed that coordinated action between government agencies, NGOs, and community-based organizations can significantly change the scenario and protect future generations.
The awareness programme witnessed participation from medical experts, students, social workers, and members of the Rotary Club of Agartala, who collectively pledged to spread knowledge and encourage preventive testing across all districts of Tripura.
