In a growing trend that has raised serious concerns among law enforcement agencies, women are increasingly being used as couriers in cannabis smuggling operations in Tripura. In a major bust today, two female traffickers were apprehended at Agartala Railway Station with a large consignment of cannabis (ganja) destined for Chennai, South India.
Acting on a tip-off from reliable sources, a joint team of the Railway Police (GRP) and the Railway Protection Force (RPF) conducted a strategic operation at the railway station. During the search, approximately 23.66 kilograms of cannabis was recovered from the possession of the two women.
According to police estimates, the seized cannabis has a market value of around Rs. 7.93 lakh. The two women had allegedly planned to board a train to Chennai with the contraband, camouflaging themselves as regular passengers to avoid suspicion.
This incident highlights the disturbing rise in the use of women as mules in the state’s drug trafficking network. Authorities believe that smuggling syndicates are increasingly deploying women in the hope of evading security checks.
Officials confirmed that an investigation is underway to identify the broader network involved in the operation and to trace the origin and destination points of the smuggled goods. The arrested women will be produced before the court, and further legal procedures will follow.
Police have reiterated their commitment to intensifying surveillance at transport hubs, especially railway stations, which continue to be a favored route for inter-state narcotics smuggling.
Further investigations are ongoing.
