A tense situation unfolded today noon at Chottakhola in Belonia as former Tripura Chief Minister and senior CPI(M) leader Manik Sarkar attended a public meeting. The event witnessed strong protests by BJP supporters, leading to the disruption of the CPI(M) gathering.
The location of the meeting holds political significance as CPI(M) candidate Badal Shil was murdered here before the last Panchayat elections. The incident had already left a sensitive political atmosphere in the area.
As the CPI(M) event proceeded with Manik Sarkar in attendance, BJP workers staged a loud protest nearby, shouting slogans that accused the previous Left Front government of failing to protect people from financial scams. The BJP supporters alleged that during the Left’s tenure, a chit fund company named Rose Valley had duped thousands of people in Tripura, and no proper compensation or justice had been provided even today.
Due to the continuous sloganeering and agitation by BJP workers, the CPI(M) meeting could not continue and eventually had to be called off. However, no major confrontation occurred as police personnel were present and prevented the situation from escalating into violence. But Manik Sarkar Condemns BJP's "Unethical Behavior".
Reacting sharply to the incident, Manik Sarkar expressed deep dissatisfaction over the disruption and termed BJP's action as undemocratic and unethical. He said that instead of addressing people’s concerns, the BJP government in Tripura has occupied the Rose Valley properties,
including its office and commercial buildings for running government offices, ignoring a court order that mandates selling these properties to compensate the victims of the scam.
Sarkar alleged that the BJP is continuously betraying the people of Tripura. He claimed that popular support for BJP is waning, which is why they are resorting to forcefully suppressing opposition voices by attacking or disrupting their meetings. According to the former Chief Minister, such tactics will not help the BJP retain power for long in the state.
