Poligamy based on sanction by religious tradition is emerging as a major problem in the Muslim community, as evident from the successive deaths of two daughters of driver Zakir Hossain in Bhagwan Nagar panchayat near Kailasahar town of Unakoti district. Sources from Kailasahar said that this morning Zakir Hossain’s four yearold daughter Khushi Begum had reportedly gone to a pond in his house and went missing around 10-00 in the morning. This was the time when Zakir Hossain who had married several times was away with the vehicle which he drives as a professional .
After being informed by mobile Zakir promptly returned home and in the course of search found his daughter floating in the pond. Khushi Begum was taken to hospital promptly but was declared ‘brought dead’ by the doctor. This sparked speculation in the entire village about possible reasons for the death by drowning of Zakir’s daughter as a few months earlier his elder had also died in a similar manner. At the time of death little Khushi was alone with her step-mother at home.
Sources said that Zakir had married several times but none of his marriages lasted . The people in the village suspect that Zakir’s present wife might have played some trick to get rid of her step daughter but the matter is being investigated by police . The villagers have demanded a full-fledged investigation into the death of little Khushi Begum but police sources said that their investigation will gain momentum only after the post-mortem report is obtained.
