Illegal stockade of pollutant Bitumen by an influential contractor and the toxic smoke billowing from it have made life unbearable for the doctors, nurses and even patients including children in the Uankoti district hospital located in Bhagwan Nagar area in Kailasahar subdivisional town. The doctors including the superintendent of the hospital Dr Rohan Paul have brought this matter to the notice of subdivisional administration but no action has so far been taken even though all the inmates of the hospital including doctors and nurses are on the point of choking .

Sources from Kailasahar said that influential local contractor Abdul Mannan who enjoys a close rapport with local leadership of ruling BJP had set up the Bitumen making machine just behind the district hospital a long time ago . This had been creating heavy smoke pollution from day one because of burning of toxic materials and a complaint had been filed with the state pollution control board . After due inspection the officials and technocrats of the state pollution control board had directed the contractor Abdul Mannan to close down his Bitumen making set up from July 1.

But Abdul Mannan defied the order and carried on his work and , as a result, the doctors, nurses and patients of the district hospital are facing serious problems. There is no respite from the toxic smoke of Bitumen even if doors and windows are closed. “Leave alone us, the doctors and nurse ; we are deeply worried about the children patients who are falling seriously ill from the evil effects of toxic smoke; this needs to be closed down immediately but the whole subdivisional administration is apathetic and doing nothing to save the children who will soon develop serious breathing problem unless smoke emanating from burning Bitumen is stopped immediately” said a senior nurse .
