A tragic incident has rocked the Kathaltali area under Amtali police station under West Tripura District, where a young man addicted to drugs ended his life, allegedly after prolonged influence and supply from a local drug dealer. The deceased, identified as Munna Das, had been addicted to brown sugar for a long time and reportedly hanged himself on Thursday to escape the grip of addiction.
Local residents have alleged that Asim Das, a well-known drug peddler in the area, had been operating freely for years, openly selling brown sugar and luring local youth into drug abuse. The matter took a grave turn after Munna’s suicide, leading to an outpouring of public anger.
What has further intensified the situation is the allegation that some local ruling party leaders and the elected Panchayat head were offering tacit support to the drug racket. Locals claim the Panchayat chief deliberately turned a blind eye to the illegal trade and indirectly shielded the peddler.
On Friday, agitated locals gathered in Kathaltali Bazaar and stormed the shop owned by the accused drug dealer, demanding immediate arrest and strict action. They also called for a probe into the political backing of the drug network in the area.
The incident has sparked debates over the role of local authorities and the need for stronger anti-drug enforcement in the area. Residents have urged the government to take strict action against all those involved and ensure no more lives are lost to drugs.
