Despite tall talks from the administration and noisy annual observance of the road safety day , the action paper of the traffic department always remains only on paper and never translates into concrete measures . The point is best illustrated by the rising number of road rages and resultant death toll.
In the latest road rage that occurred this morning a poor labourer was crushed to death on road in Kanchanpur subdivision of north Tripura. Sources from Kanchanpur said that poor labourer Hemanta Chakma (35), a resident of remote Khabongcherra village had been crossing the Dashda-Ananda Bazar road at Naisingpara around 10-00 in the morning . As he was unmindfully crossing the road a Bolero vehicle coming at high speed from Dashda end pushed him down and crushed him before fleeing the spot. Hemanta was taken to Kanchanpur hospital by local people on another vehicle but was declared ‘brought dead’. His body was handed over to his family members after statutory post-mortem. Hemanta is survived by his wife and four children.
Sources from Kanchanpur said that vehicles always ply on Dashda-Ananda Bazar road at high speed as there is no traffic control or surveillance on this strategic road . The people living along the road in different areas have never seen any traffic personnel or vehicle for the purpose of occasional monitoring. This has already resulted in a number of deaths on this road over the past two years.
