In a glaring instance of police’s dereliction of duty and inertia, the police officers of Jolaibari police station in south Tripura advised a hapless mother to rescue her two yearold daughter from Karimganj in the Barak Valley district of Assam . The hapless mother who has no means of going as far as Karimganj finally turned to media persons for help in getting back her lost daughter.

Giving details of the incident, sources from Jolaibari said that on last Sunday Pratima Debnath (36), wife of Ranjit Debnath of Ramraibari area under Jolaibari police station, had gone to her paternal home in west Jolaibari (ward no-6) with her two yearold daughter Riya Debnath on last Monday. But subsequently little Riya went missing and despite best efforts and searching Pratima and her husband could not trace their daughter . Finally they filed written complaint to the Jolaibari police station urging the officer in charge to trace out and rescue their two yearold daughter.

But the officer in charge is so callous and cynical that without even searching for the missing baby girl he told her parents that Riya was in an area of Karimganj and they should go there to find out their daughter. Sources said that the callous police personnel of Jolaibari always avoid performing even their basic duties unless there is prospect for extorting bribes and slush money. “What is most unfortunate is that despite knowing everything neither the SDPO nor the SP (south ) takes any action to set things right or to chastise the corrupt and irresponsible police personnel manning police stations” said sources. Little Riya’s parents are now planning to move higher authority for rescuing their daughter.

Meanwhile, a housewife identified as Swapna Biswas (31) was found dead in her husband Biswajit Biswas’s home in Kali Bazar area under Bamutia outpost in Mohanpur subdivision yesterday around 10-00 in the night. Police sources said that acting on a tip-off provided by local informers a police party recovered the dead body of Swapna bearing multiple injuries but her husband suspected to have committed the murder had fled even before police reached his home. Sources said that Biswajit Biswas (38),a notorious drug peddler in the area, had earlier married two other women one of whom had deserted him and the other had eloped with his younger brother. The SDPO (Mohanpur) Sabyasachi Debnath , officer in charge of Lefunga police station Sahadeb Das and personnel fromBamutia police outpost had reached the spot. The SDPO Sabyasachi Debnath told media persons that details of the incident could be known only after post-mortem which is being done in Mohanpur today.
