The vengeful interim government of Bangladesh has not so far been able to produce and concrete or specific evidence of genocide allegedly ordered by ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina during the countrywide political turmoil in July-August last year. This came to light in the course of hearing of charges against Hasina in the in the international criminal court (ICT) where a trial against her is now on in absentia. It was only last Monday that the state-appointed advocate for Hasina, Amir Hossain had challenged the charges brought against her and argued that the state authority had failed to put forward even prima facie evidence against the ousted prime minister.

“There was no war in the country in July-August last year but only a political agitation which the duty-bound police personnel sought to curb when violence broke out; then prime minister Sheikh Hasina had no role to play in this regard ; there is absolutely no evidence that she had personally ordered any firing or use of heavy arms leading to the death of so many persons; rather during her rule the economy of the country had undergone remarkable development as evident from the construction of the Padma bridge , introduction of metro rail and great development of infrastructure all over the country and this can be proved beyond any reasonable doubt” said advocate Amir Hossain.

The case of genocide against Sheikh Hasina had commenced from June 7 with framing of charges under the supervision of ICT judge Md Golam Murtaza. Even though the prosecutors representing the government resorted to rhetorical arguments without any proof , advocate Amir Hossain representing Hasina said that there were ‘Rajakars’ in the country as there still are and will remain but Sheikh Hasina never meant to paint the youths of the country as ‘Rajakars’. “Many Rajakars of 1971 have been punished and sentenced to death but that was by due legal process and not at Sheikh Hasina’s dictate; hence she can not be held responsible for any of the offences on this count” said advocate Amir Hossain while countering the bluster and rhetoric with evidence of the advocates representing the prosecution.

Sources from Bangladesh said that the Yunus regime is getting increasingly nervous over the declining popularity of the illegitimate interim government and is desperate to get Sheikh Hasina sentenced. A brazen effort is on to rush things up and have a sentence proclaimed as early as possible even bypassing normal judicial procedure.
