The organised attack on senior Congress MLA and former PCC president Gopal Roy by a large gang of BJP miscreants on Sunday has evoked a chain reaction in different parts of the state. Gopal had gone to attend a pre-arranged meeting of party workers in a locality of his constituency Banamalipur in Agartala. But large gang of BJP miscreants had disrupted his meeting by storming into the meeting site and threatened him with dire consequences if he persisted with such programmes. A number of Congress workers and supporters who had come in connection with the meeting were also beaten up and warned against attending such programmes.

In the wake of the planned disruption Gopal had filed specific complaints with the East Agartala police station, naming the attackers and pointing out that he had gone to address the meeting after obtaining permission for the same from the police authority. As a mark of protest against the hooliganism a delegation of Congress led by the PCC president Asish Kumar Saha met in deputation with the DGP Anurag Dharkhar in the state police headquarter and pressed for action against the culprits.

Besides, Congress units in Khowai, Kailasahar, Dharma Nagar, Gandacherra and Raima Valley also held protest rallies against BJP’s attack on Gopal Roy. The Raima Valley block Congress committee also held a protest march and a street corner meeting in Gandacherra town today in condemnation of the attack on senior party leader Gopal Roy. The entire programme was organised by the Raima Valley block Congress president Ranjit Tripura. Addressing the street corner meeting Ranjit Tripura condemned the politics of hooliganism being practiced by BJP all over the state and asserted that if this politics continues the people of the state will rise in revolt and unseat BJP from power democratically in the next assembly polls in 2028.
