The Indian legal system-based on realities of patriarchal societal values-always look upon women as the victim in the case of conjugal disputes as the pre-conceived notion is that women are invariably at the receiving end whenever any conjugal commotion arises. But there are quite a few cases where it is the menfolk who suffer ,being subjected to all kinds of harassment and even persecution from women including consorts.

Such a case has come to notice from Kadamtala area of Dharma Nagar subdivision in north Tripura. As per the details of the case given out by the persecuted husband Amitabha Nath , a resident of ward no-6 of Kadamtala panchayat he had married Paramita Nath of ward no-5 of the same panchayat on March 5 2021. The couple had a happy conjugal life in the first year of their marriage but within the year Paramita demanded to be allowed to study a physiotherapy course in Calcutta . Her husband Amitabha agreed to finance her study in Calcutta and accordingly Paramita completed her course and got a job in a private nursing home there.

But then the conjugal relationship between Amitabha and Paramita developed strains as she gradually disassociated herself from her husband by blocking him from her mobile, ‘Facebook’ and Whatsapp. It was because Paramita used to engage in long telephonic conversation with other men in Calcutta and this created trouble. Having lost contact with wife Amitabha reached Calcutta but was told by Paramita that she would never return home at Kadamtala. She also demanded divorce from her husband.

Rattled by the treacherous behaviour of his wife Amitabha filed a divorce case in Dharma Nagar family court which has already been heard several times by the family court judge in presence of Paramita who had returned for the case. But the matter took a serious turn on July 4 when out of nothing Paramita filed a false case of domestic violence against her husband Amitabha in the Kadamtala police station even though she had been living in her paternal home since return from Calcutta in connection with the court case. Not resting at that , Paramita has been running a campaign of calumny against her husband Amitabha. Responding to this Amitabha also filed a case against Paramita and her father Subhas Nath in the Kadamtala police station on July 6.

Speaking to media persons today Amitabha Nath said that he is being unnecessarily harassed and vilified by his estranged wife Paramita even when a court case for legal separation is on in court. “I want an end to this and I appeal to the authority to suitably amend the marriage and divorce laws to make them even-handed so that the women folk can not derive any undue advantage of law” said Amitabha . He added that he would address letters in this regard to the union law ministry, supreme court and the law commission.
