The North Eastern Council (NEC) has approved a financial allocation of Rs. 14.22 crore for Tripura to support various developmental initiatives. The decision was taken during a high-level meeting held on July 4 at the NEC Conference Hall in Shillong, chaired by NEC Secretary Satindra Kumar Bhatia. Officials from the Planning Department of the Tripura Government and senior NEC functionaries participated in the meeting.
The meeting reviewed the progress and implementation status of several proposals submitted by the Tripura government. Since its inception in 1971, NEC has played a crucial role in the infrastructural and socio-economic development of Tripura by funding numerous projects under NESIDS (Road), NESIDS, and NEC schemes.
Over the years, NEC funding has supported key establishments and infrastructure in the state, including the Regional Institute for Pharmaceutical Science and Technology (RIPSAT), a Diabetic Research Centre in Agartala, trauma centres at Kulai and Amarpur, the Rukhia gas-based power plant, several fertilizer stations and supply line upgrades, Chandrapur
Inter-State Bus Terminal, an energy park in Agartala, and major road development works.
The current allocation of Rs. 14.22 crore will support multiple new projects, including:
Establishment of fish breeding farms at Hawaibari in Khowai and Joychandra Para in South Tripura district.
Implementation of key services under Ganganagar RD Block and Raishyabari RD Block.
Excavation of ponds and renovation of small water bodies.
Setting up of six integrated seed processing plants.
Construction of two modern agricultural markets.
Development of integrated pack houses, warehouses, and poultry hatcheries in Dhalai district.
Construction of a new building for Vivekananda Tripureswari Vidyamandir School.
Organization of GL product-based workshops and an international chemistry conference.
Installation of solar-powered irrigation pumps in a government-run orchid garden.
However, concerns have been raised over a declining number of project proposals being submitted to the NEC from Tripura. In earlier years, the state used to submit proposals worth Rs. 300–Rs. 400 crore annually, but the frequency and volume have dropped significantly. Experts believe the lack of a dedicated expert team within the state government to design and submit large-scale projects may be contributing to this downward trend in funding.
Despite these concerns, the NEC continues to support Tripura’s developmental roadmap, reaffirming its commitment to enhancing infrastructure and livelihood opportunities across the state.
