Tipra Motha MLA Ranjit Debbarma who had stirred a massive controversy on last Saturday by announcing in an interaction with the media that the party would withdraw support to the government unless their demands are fulfilled by July 20 was contradicted by the party supremo Pradyot Kishore within a few hours . Pradyot Kishore had pleaded ignorance of Ranjit’s statement in the press conference but Ranjit has justified his position in an interview with a media outlet stating that before his interaction with the media he had had discussion with Pradyot Kishore and even the latter’s sister and BJP MP Kriti Debi Singh had also agreed with the position.
Ranjit also dismissed allegations of perceived ‘anti-Bengali’ attitude of a section of ‘Motha’ leaders, specially in the context of the demand for deportation of foreigners. “The perception of our attitude and demand as anti-Bengali is very wrong; please do not equate illegal infiltrators with Bengalis in general ; the infiltrators also include people not only from Bangladesh but also from Myanmar and many of them are not Bengalis while the illegal infiltrators from Bangladesh include people belonging to various faiths and cultures also. What we want is state government’s action on the central guideline ; many infiltrators are being deported from Maharashtra, Gujrat and other states also and we want the state government to be up and doing in the matter of identifying and pushing back infiltrators” said Ranjit . He also wondered why the chief minister of Tripura is not vocal on the issue like the chief minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma.
Ranjit also vented his disappointment over non-fulfilment of the terms and conditions of the peace accord signed with the Centre and state government more than a year ago. “Even now there is no initiative to further empower the ADC by passing the 125th amendment of the constitution; I am really disappointed over all these and I have also written to the chief minister on all these issues” he said. On the role of CPI (M) and Congress Ranjit said that the two parties want to fish in troubled water ‘otherwise why do not Jiten Chowdhury and Sudip Roybarman speak on the issue of illegal infiltration from Bangladesh’. Ranjit categorically said as an MLA that after going for alliance with BJP neither the ‘Tipra Motha’ nor the indigenous people of Tripura have got anything.
He however asserted that a delegation of the party will visit Delhi soon and hold discussion with the BJP led central government and after an assessment of the situation an appropriate decision will be taken. Ranjit also clarified that a discussion with Centre is required before taking the final plunge because ‘Tipra Motha’ as a party is still in alliance with BJP.
