A massive apolitical rally, led by Tipra Motha MLA and former militant leader Ranjit Debbarma, swept through the streets of Agartala on Monday, drawing thousands of participants from across Tripura.

The rally, devoid of political flags and marked by a sea of national tricolours, was organised to demand the detention and deportation of illegal Bangladeshi nationals from the state. Though Tipra Motha chief Pradyot Kishore Debbarman was expected to attend, he was unable to participate due to urgent engagements in Delhi.

Addressing the gathering, Debbarma stated, “This is not a political rally. I stand here not as an MLA but as a concerned citizen. The demographic future of Tripura is at stake.” He welcomed the Centre’s 2025 directive on deportation and urged state authorities to act, alleging that earlier directives from 1971, 2017, and 2021 were ignored.

Calling for unity across communities, Debbarma said, “This issue affects everyone-tribals, Bengalis, Hindus, Muslims. We must rise above divisions.” Drawing a parallel with the United States, he added, “If America can deport undocumented Indians in chains, India must also enforce its immigration laws.”
