Congress MLA Gopal Chandra Roy Allegedly Attacked During Party Meeting in Banamalipur; Returns Home Under Police Protection

Tension flared up in Agartala's Banamalipur area this noon after Congress MLA Gopal Chandra Roy was allegedly attacked by some BJP supporters during a party meeting in Ward No. 31. The incident occurred at the residence of Babul Roy, where the Congress meeting was underway.

According to Gopal Chandra Roy, a group of BJP supporters stormed the venue, locked him inside a room, and tried to obstruct the meeting despite prior police permission. He claimed that it was not only a direct attack on democratic rights but also an attempt on his life. "Even with police permission, I was not allowed to hold the meeting. This is the condition of democracy in Tripura," Roy told the media after the incident.

He further alleged that the attackers made an attempt to harm him physically in the presence of police personnel, yet no arrests were made on the spot. Roy demanded a proper investigation into the incident, the immediate arrest of the culprits, and enhancement of his personal security. He also appealed to the Chief Minister to intervene.
