CPI(M) Polit Bureau member and Tripura Leader of Opposition Jitendra Choudhury launched a scathing attack on the BJP-led central government and regional party TIPRA Motha during a massive rally held in Sonamura on Saturday.
The rally was organized by the CPI(M) Sonamura Sub-Divisional Committee to mobilize support for the nationwide general strike scheduled on July 9.
Prior to the rally, a large procession comprising CPI(M) workers and supporters marched through various parts of Sonamura town. The rally culminated at Rabindra Chowmuhani, where leaders addressed the public.
In his speech, Choudhury criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi for promoting an illusion of economic growth during his foreign visits while the ground reality in India paints a different picture.
“Unemployment is skyrocketing, and workers, farmers, and daily wage earners are struggling to feed their families. Yet the government talks about an 'Amrit Kaal'. In truth, they are only working for corporate interests and suppressing the voices of protest,” said Choudhury.
Highlighting the growing discontent among the people, Choudhury emphasized the importance of the July 9 general strike. “This is not just a strike—it’s a call for change. The strike will send a strong message to the government,” he said.
In a significant political development during the rally, 19 families comprising 74 voters formally left the BJP and joined the CPI(M), expressing their frustration with the state government's performance. Jitendra Choudhury welcomed them into the party by handing over CPI(M) flags.
