25 families suffering from drainage woes

Despite tall claims of development under the state’s “double engine” government, several pockets continue to reel under basic civic issues — a glaring example being Ward No. 5 of Kumarghat Municipal Council, where nearly 25 families remain marooned due to a longstanding drainage crisis.

Residents of the ward, particularly those living in one specific locality, have been grappling with severe water logging problems for an extended period. During the monsoon, stagnant water renders the roads virtually unusable, severely affecting daily life.

Local resident Deb Singh Debbarma, speaking to the media, said, “Around 25 families live in this area of Ward No. 5. For a long time, we have been facing constant inconvenience due to water accumulation. The roads remain submerged in knee-deep water. Children can’t go to school, patients can’t be taken out, and essential activities are disrupted.”

Debbarma added that prior to the onset of the monsoon, the issue was reported in writing to the Kumarghat Municipal Council. He also personally contacted the Chairperson of the council, who had assured that the matter would be taken seriously. “However,” he lamented, “no visible action has been taken till date. We are left with no choice but to voice our concerns publicly now. The rainwater overflows into the streets, and in the absence of any proper drainage, it seeps into our locality. We urge the authorities to intervene immediately.”

The lack of a proper drainage system is not only causing inconvenience but also triggering health concerns. The stagnant water has become a breeding ground for mosquitoes, raising fears of vector-borne diseases such as dengue and malaria.

So far, there has been no official response from the Kumarghat Municipal Council regarding the matter. However, residents hope that with media attention now focused on their plight, the concerned authorities will finally take concrete steps to resolve the issue and provide a permanent solution.
