Tripura Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha on Wednesday announced plans to install speed tracking systems at strategic locations across the state to curb reckless driving, particularly by commercial vehicles. Speaking at the launch of 16 Basic Life Support (BLS) ambulances, he stressed that public transport safety is a top priority, and violators of speed limits will soon face hefty fines.
Highlighting road safety concerns, Dr Saha said the government is also considering legislation mandating periodic fitness checks for all vehicles. “Mechanical faults are a leading cause of road accidents. We cannot afford to ignore vehicle fitness,” he stated.
Addressing the issue of overloaded trucks, he revealed that central officials recently visited Tripura to inspect the damage caused to newly constructed highways. “They confirmed that overloading is degrading our roads rapidly. Strict enforcement is necessary,” he noted.
The Chief Minister also called for strict action against liquor shops near highways and urged the police to strictly enforce the double-helmet rule.
Appreciating the Transport Department’s efforts, Dr Saha said the newly inducted ambulances would significantly improve emergency response. “Immediate life support can save lives. This is a crucial step in road safety and healthcare,” he concluded.
