Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha has ordered a Magisterial Inquiry over the death of one Kailash Rai on June 29 while he was in jail custody at Bishalgarh Central Jail. The order asked to inquire under what circumstances he died. He was arrested on June 21 in connection with a case and was in Jail Custody. The authority has already completed the inquest and handed over the body to the family members after a due post-mortem. The family members had initially refused to take the body, complaining that he died due to torture in custody, but subsequently received the body.

The Chief Minister issued the Magisterial Inquiry order after the issue took a political turn, and the leader of the opposition and CPI(M) state secretary, Jiten Choudhury visited the house of the victim at Goala Basti near the state secretariat on Tuesday. He said he was arrested without any grounds and it was a planned murder.

Choudhury said one person is trying to capture the land of the Goala Basti inhabited by some Behari people, and the police have connived with this person. Earlier, a court order was issued against 11 persons, and the family of Kailash Rai was one of them.
