In a strong show of dissent, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) staged a protest in front of the Tripura Police Headquarters on Tuesday, demanding an end to ongoing terror activities and the establishment of the rule of law in the Jirania subdivision. The protest was marked by intense sloganeering, red flags, and strong accusations against the state administration and police.

Leading the agitation, CPI(M) Central Committee member Manik Dey delivered a sharp message to the police, stating that he himself cannot visit several areas of his own constituency due to prevailing terror. “In Jirania subdivision, democracy is being systematically destroyed. Any conscientious police officer should feel ashamed seeing the situation,” said Dey. He further urged the police to act with integrity and spine, and to protect the people’s democratic rights without bowing to political pressure.

The rally, organized by the CPI(M) Jirania Subdivision Committee, began from the party’s West District office and marched through the streets to reach the Police Headquarters at Fire Service Chowmuhani. People from various tribal and non-tribal communities joined with red flags in hand, chanting slogans for the restoration of law and order.

Senior party leaders including State Secretariat members Rama Das, Radhacharan Debbarma, Ratan Das, State Committee member Madhusudan Das, Jirania Subdivision Secretary Subhash Dey, and Tapan Das, among others, led the march alongside affected people from Mandai, Majlishpur, Khayerpur, and parts of Takarjala constituencies.

Following the demonstration, a protest meeting was held in front of the Police Headquarters where speaker after speaker criticized the police administration for allegedly playing a biased role under political influence. The party demanded immediate action against miscreants, and effective policing in Jirania subdivision, including within the subdivision administrative office areas.

Later, a five-member CPI(M) delegation led by West District Secretary Ratan Das met with the Additional Director General of Police to submit a memorandum and press for neutral police action to safeguard law and order.

Addressing the gathering, Manik Dey reminded the police of the Left Front’s legacy. “For 25 years we governed the state. Even if a ruling party member committed a crime, they went to jail. Can any officer say we gave unlawful orders? Why then are the police now bowing to even local leaders of the ruling party?” he asked.

Rama Das, a state secretariat member, also spoke during the protest, highlighting the rising crime rate in Tripura. “Murders, rapes, and gang rapes are on the rise. Neither children nor the elderly are safe,” she said, slamming the government and calling for police accountability.

The CPI(M) reiterated its demand for a police force that acts independently and without political influence, to ensure democracy and safety for the people of Tripura, especially in terror-affected zones like Jirania.
