Despite Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha’s recent stern warning against mafia elements in the state, incidents of violence, illegal land mafia activities continue unabated in Tripura. In a shocking development late last night, a brutal armed attack took place near Circuit House in Agartala, exposing the grim ground reality.
At around 8 PM, a group of armed miscreants stormed the residence of local promoter Uttam Saha, armed with iron rods and firearms. Saha was reportedly hacked with a machete and left critically injured. Another promoter, Manik Choudhury of GB Bazar area, who was present at the time, was also attacked and sustained injuries. Though police arrived at the scene, the attackers managed to flee, and no arrests have been made so far. Both the injured were shifted to GB hospital.
Sources indicate that this is not the first time Uttam Saha and Manik Choudhury has faced such violence; a previous attack at Manik Chowdhury's GB Bazar residence had also been reported. The motive behind this latest attack is believed to be linked to a dispute over a tender deal.
Just a few days ago, during an event at Sukanta Academy premises, Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha had publicly warned mafias involved in
illegal tender and land dealings. He assured that the police and administrative machinery would take strict action. However, the situation on the ground reflects a different picture altogether.
Despite the Chief Minister's direct caution, reports of illegal land deals, tender practices and bribery in the name of negotiation ("negotiation") have emerged from multiple areas including Shantirbazar, Belonia, Khowai, Udaipur, Kailashahar, Kamalpur and Dharmanagar. Allegations include financial transactions for tender and even physical violence to force withdrawal of tenders.
In the case of the Circuit House attack, preliminary investigations suggest that the incident is deeply linked to tender-related financial disputes. Mafia groups are allegedly pressuring individuals through violence to influence tender processes across Tripura.
The continuing violence and blatant disregard for the Chief Minister’s warning have raised serious concerns about law and order in the state. Citizens and observers are now questioning the effectiveness of administrative control over rising mafia operations, especially in sectors like real estate, public works, and land deals.
