BJP State President Election in Tripura Postponed: Central Leadership Unhappy with Unilateral Decisions

In a dramatic turn of events, the much-anticipated election for the post of State President of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Tripura has been officially postponed, just two days before the scheduled polling date of June 29. This development comes three years after the initial announcement of the party’s internal election schedule under Sangathan Parv-2024.

A corrigendum issued today by State Returning Officer Samarendra Ch. Deb (Notification No. 1690/Sangathan Parv/2024) declared the withdrawal of the earlier notification (No. 1689/BJP/Sangathan Parv/2024 dated June 27, 2025) regarding the election. The decision to withhold the election has been taken until the issuance of further notification.

Sources within the party indicate that the sudden move came after the central leadership of BJP expressed strong dissatisfaction over the unilateral decisions allegedly made by the State Returning Officer, which reportedly violated the directives of the central observers. According to insiders, a vested interest group within the state unit was attempting to push forward their preferred candidate for the post of BJP State President, bypassing the established norms and central guidelines.

This move sparked serious concerns among top leaders in New Delhi, prompting the intervention of the national leadership. As a result, instructions were sent to Samarendra Deb to immediately halt the election process, which was scheduled for June 29. The corrigendum, dated June 27, 2025, was officially released this afternoon to confirm the postponement.

The party notice has been copied to the official notice board and the BJP’s party web handle for public record.

This development is likely to trigger further debate and internal review within the Tripura unit of the BJP, as the central leadership is expected to take a closer look at the recent activities of the state election machinery and the motives of the individuals involved.

As of now, no fresh date has been announced for the rescheduled election of the Tripura BJP State President.
