The chief minister Dr Manik Saha has been generous in extending liberal financial assistance to people in distress through his weekly ‘Mukhyamantri Samipeshu’ programme. Many people including serious patients and students in need of money for prosecuting their studies have benefited from the chief minister’s munificence already.

Yesterday, the 24th day of June, was another such day of bounties from Dr Saha to distressed people. It was on June 17 that three innocent teenaged boys had gone to have bath in a large but mostly abandoned pond belonging to the agriculture department in MB Tilla area of Agartala. By a quirk of tragic fate all three teenagers, Bobby Shukla Das, Shubhrajit De and Shubham Deb had gone deep into the pond without knowing how to swim and all three drowned to death, leaving their families in terrible grief. This jinxed pond had purportedly been cleaned and rejuvenated for use by the Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) with ‘Ganga Puja’ only on June 13.

However the chief minister had summoned the next of kin in the grief stricken families of all three teenagers and handed over to them cheques of Rs 4 lakhs each . Dr Saha also consoled them saying their loss was irreparable but nothing could be done against what possibly had been ordained by destiny. He requested them to utilize the money for their families in remembrance of their lost wards.
