The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party on Tuesday held a series of pressing conferences across the state to recall the horror of the emergency promulgated under the rule of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

Speaking on the occasion, BJP Tripura Pradesh Vice President said, “The emergency period is a black spot on our Indian democracy. This is why we shall observe June 25 as the black day. This year marks the 50 years of the emergency.” He was speaking at a press conference organised by BJP Sadar (Rural) district.

BJP MLA from Panisagar constituency, Binay Bhushan Das held a similar press conference at the district office in Padmapur, North Tripura.

Das stated that the Emergency, which lasted for 21 months from June 25, 1975, to March 21, 1977, was imposed under Article 352 of the Constitution. The declaration was made by then President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed based on the advice of the Prime Minister. During this period, citizens’ fundamental rights were suspended, opposition leaders were jailed, press freedom was curbed through heavy censorship, and the independence of the judiciary was severely undermined.

The BJP leader said that the observance of ‘Black Day’ each year serves as a reminder of the grave threat posed to India’s democratic foundations during the Emergency. It also seeks to make citizens more aware and proactive in safeguarding democracy. “June 25 is not merely a date in history. It is a stark reminder of the dangers of authoritarianism and the vital need for constant vigilance to protect our democratic values,” said Das.

He further remarked that the Emergency shattered the democratic framework of the country and remains one of the most undemocratic decisions ever taken in India’s political history. He called upon citizens to remember the events of 1975, understand their significance, and carry forward the responsibility of upholding democracy.

Similar press conferences had been held in all district headquarters. The Sadar urban district press conference was addressed by BJP Tripura State spokesman Subrata Chakraborty.
