Tripura Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury on Monday announced a 13 percent decline in road accident cases over the past year, attributing the improvement to the Tripura Police and traffic unit’s active surveillance and effective intervention.

Speaking after a meeting of the State Road Safety Council, attended by officials from the Health Department, Tripura Police, and other key departments, the Minister said, “The traffic and police departments have played a vital role in curbing road accidents. We hope to further reduce the numbers significantly in the coming days.”

Chowdhury also revealed plans to adopt a central government scheme that offers cashless treatment to accident victims. “Victims will be eligible for cashless treatment up to Rs 1.5 lakh at empanelled hospitals. However, we are still in discussions to clarify certain operational aspects before implementation,” he stated.

He added that once key issues like hospital empanelment and eligibility criteria are resolved in consultation with the Centre, Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha will formally launch the scheme. The initiative aims to ensure timely and accessible medical care for accident victims across Tripura.
