Starting today, Tripura has officially been recognized as the third fully literate state in India, following Goa and Mizoram. Tripura’s Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha made this historic announcement at a special event held in Agartala. He highlighted that while Tripura’s literacy rate was just 20.24% in 1961, it has now risen to an impressive 95.6% functional literacy rate, according to the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS).

The Chief Minister credited this extraordinary achievement to the relentless efforts of 2,228 volunteers from the Youth Literacy Corps and the 943 Social Awareness Centres established under the 'ULLAS – Nav Bharat Saksharta Karyakram' (NILP).

Speaking at the event organized by the School Education Department at Rabindra Bhavan, the Chief Minister described the day as a historic moment for Tripura. This recognition stands as a shining example of a transformative social success. As the third state in the country to earn this prestigious status, after Goa and Mizoram, Tripura now joins the ranks of regions like Ladakh, which was the first Union Territory to be declared fully literate.

Distinguished guests from both the Central and State governments, including Mrs. Preeti Meena, Director of Adult Education, Ministry of Education, Government of India, Mr. Raval Hemendra Kumar, Special Secretary (Education), Government of Tripura, and Mrs. Lalnunemi Darlong, Director, SCERT, attended the program. Mr. N.C. Sharma, Director of Secondary and Elementary Education and State Project Director, Samagra Shiksha, presided over the event.
