The depredations of wild elephant herd that descend on foothill villages below Barmura hills in Teliamura subdivision is nothing new. During the past many years people living scared in the villages on plainlands below the Barmura hill range have lost their home-steads , standing crops , fruits and vegetables . There have also been several cases of fatalities as people were crushed under foot by the prowling elephants. But there has been no remedial action and people in these villages under Kalyanpur, Teliamura and Krishnapur assembly constituencies spend sleepless nights for fear of rampaging elephants. The feeble attempts that the forest department officials take to ward off the wild elephant her do not yield any long-term positive result.
Early this morning around 3-00 AM a herd of wild elephants who hardly find any food or drinking water in their natural habitats in the hills descended to the North Krishnapur village and destroyed a number of homesteads, crops, trees and vegetables of people. In order to save their lives the people of North Krishnapur ran helter skelter. Finally , after being informed the armed forest volunteers reached the village and controlled the situation by driving the elephant herd away.
The people of North Krishnapur and other affected areas have demanded a permanent solution to this problem, saying that the government or the forest department should take measures to ensure that the elephants remain in their natural habitats and do not come down to human habitations. They pointed out that because of fear of elephants they can not even sleep peacefully at night.
