The Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee has strongly condemned a violent attack on its joining program held today at Dataram Market Complex under the Matabari Assembly Constituency in Udaipur. The event, which had the approval of the local administration, was attended by senior Congress leader and AICC permanent invitee Sudip Roy Barman, District Congress President Titon Pal, and General Secretary Milan Kar.
In a press statement, a spokesperson of the Pradesh Congress alleged that miscreants sheltered by the ruling BJP launched a brutal assault on the gathering. Several Congress workers and new joiners were reportedly injured and left bloodied in the attack.
The Congress claimed that the growing public resentment against the BJP-led 'triple engine government' has led to an increasing number of people, especially from the tribal communities, joining the Congress. Alarmed by this trend, the ruling party has been deploying anti-social elements to disrupt peaceful democratic activities, the statement said.
"The naked attack witnessed today is a desperate attempt by a panicked and isolated ruling party to suppress dissent. The BJP government must remember that democracy cannot be throttled through fear and violence. The people of Tripura are awakening and will oust this government through democratic means," the Congress said.
The party demanded immediate legal action against the attackers and warned the BJP leadership that autocratic tactics will not help them cling to power for long.
