Infiltration from Bangladesh has been a legitimate issue of concern , at least since the mid-seventies of the last century-so much so that the demographic profile of northeastern states, specially Assam has undergone a massive change. Even the state of West Bengal is threatened dangerously with a massive shift in demographic balance from ceaseless infiltration of Muslims from Bangladesh , first during the long left front rule and more alarmingly since the misrule of Mamata Banerjee began since the year 2011. Mamata who was once extremely vocal against infiltration till coming to power has now morphed into the biggest patron of illegal Bangladeshi termites for building a captive vote bank at the cost of national interest.
Be that as it may, the situation in Tripura is no less alarming as infiltration into the state has also been continuing over the past many years . Even though most of the infiltrators fan out to other Indian states, using Tripura as a safe corridor the problem is real because of the low growth of indigenous population and hyper-growth of Muslim population by the rule of geometrical proportion. Under pressure from union home ministry the state has recently waked up to the issue but a lot more need to be done to contain and curb infiltration from the hellscape of communal Bangladesh.
But what is significant is that the ‘Tipra Motha’ has launched a movement against this issue even though the ruling BJP should have been more active and earnest in anti-infiltration movement and in raising awareness among people over the threat of demographic invasion. Yesterday the Sabroom unit of ‘Tipra Motha’ organised a massive rally and demonstration against administrative inertia over infiltration and demanding drastic action. A memorandum containing the ‘Motha’s demand was also submitted to the SDM (Sabroom). After the submission of the memorandum the minister for forest and science and technology, Animesh Debbarma addressed the gathering of party workers and put the entire people of the state on alert against the menace of infiltration and how it will destroy the state. “ I would urge upon the people to remember how they were persecuted when they were in East Pakistan and Bangladesh but the majority section of population and the government there ; unless we take care and action now Tripura will also face a major threat ; all sections of people should fight together to prevent infiltration and drive out those who have already come here as infiltrators” said Animesh. He also wondered what the state police, MTF and BSF along the border are doing and how Bangladeshis are infiltrating the state through the barbed wire fencing. Animesh called upon the government and all agencies to work hard from the viewpoint of national interest to completely stop infiltration from across the border regardless of identities.
Even though a section has tried to twist and turn the speech out of context, Animesh’s speech has been appreciated by the people. A political leader of BJP from Sabroom said on condition of anonymity that what Animesh said is absolutely right and people here should be more conscious of the threat but He would do well to raise the issue within the government and mount pressure for drastic action.
