A veritable war of words has broken out between the leader of the opposition Jiten Chowdhury and agriculture minister Ratan Lal Nath over a comment made by the former in a meeting in Sarbroom and reaction to this of the latter. It was on June 15 that Jiten Chowdhury, while addressing a mass rally in Sabroom , had described former chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb as ‘stupid’, the Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma as ‘cheat’ and the BJP and ‘Tipra Motha’ parties as ‘frauds’. “A tall man is stupid in proportion to his height” Jiten had said in reference to Biplab’s height . These unsavoury comments made on the spur of the moment in the course of a political speech delivered in a remote corner of the state became a hot issue and Ratan Lal Nath pounced on this with great enthusiasm.
Speaking to media persons in the BJP party headquarter at Krishan Nagar in Agartala yesterday Ratan Lal Nath demanded an unconditional apology from Jiten Chowdhury for his comments. “Jiten Babu does not know which expression to use and when, that is his problem; in the last assembly session I had said that he had proved his standard but he twisted my comments out of context and campaigned all over the state saying with my comments on him I had insulted the tribal community of the state; but now he has again made known his standard” said Ratan. He also reeled off a long list of tall but very eminent and successful persons such as Rabindra Nath Tagore, Satyajit Roy, late Orisssa chief minister Biju Patnaik, Amitava Bachhan, Niraj Chopra, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. “Does Jiten Babu mean that these tall stalwarts were all fools ? Does he know the name of American scientist Robert Parsing who was 8 feet and 11 inches tall or Indian writer Bikash Utpalla who was 8 feet 2 inches tall” asked Ratan. He added that physical height is a God-gifted thing which should never be made an object of ridicule. “This is either due to Jiten Babu’s inadequate knowledge of language or due to his despair over the state of politics“ said Ratan Lal.
The hilarious exchange further enlivened the political discourse as the leader of the opposition Jiten Chowdhury commented that “Ratan Babu is an aged man and has been overtaken by senility”. Jiten further said that Ratan Lal Nath should undergo treatment under the care of a good doctor. “Ratan Babu is an asset of the state and he should continue in politics as vigorously as possible; I would suggest that in stead of going to Ranchi (lunatic asylum) he should visit good hospitals in Delhi and Bangalore; if he wants I can give him names of doctors and hospitals he should get in touch with” said Jiten in his last comment on the issue as of now.
