The State Government on Monday released the merit lists for five major recruitment examinations, offering hope to many job aspirants across Tripura. While the move has been welcomed, concerns have intensified over the widening gap between annual retirements of government employees and the pace of fresh recruitments.

The announced merit lists include TET-I (458 qualified candidates), TET-II (1,589 qualified), and Physical Education Teacher exam (158 qualified), all conducted by the Teachers' Recruitment Board, Tripura (TRBT). Alongside, the Tripura Public Service Commission (TPSC) declared merit lists for Junior Engineer (Civil: 162, Electrical: 10, Mechanical: 12) posts.

Following the announcement, Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha congratulated the successful candidates and applauded their hard work, stating that these recruitments will strengthen key departments and enhance public service delivery.

However, data from the last several years reveal a growing imbalance in the government workforce. Each year, more than 3,500 to 4500 state government employees retire, leaving behind a significant number of vacancies. In contrast, based on calculations of recruitment trends from the past seven years, the average number of unemployed youths recruited annually is only about 2,000 to 2500 far fewer than the number of employees retiring.

This shortfall has sparked concerns among job seekers and policy observers. Many warn that if this trend continues, it could lead to serious manpower shortages, especially in crucial sectors like education, health, engineering services, police and civil administration.

Several youth organizations have demanded that the state government accelerate the recruitment process, fill up all backlog vacancies, and launch new employment drives to tap into the potential of thousands of qualified but unemployed youths in the state.

While the recently declared merit lists reflect a step forward, experts stress the need for a comprehensive recruitment policy to align new appointments with the rate of retirements ensuring both continuity in governance and opportunities for Tripura’s growing educated youth population.
