A team from the Turtle Alliance Foundation visited Kalyansagar Lake, located within the Tripura Sundari temple complex, to assess the habitat of the endangered Bostami turtles. The visit was part of a broader initiative aimed at turtle conservation in the sacred lake.
District Magistrate of Gomati, Tarit Kanti Chakma, along with senior Forest Department officials, accompanied the team during the field inspection. Representatives Dr Arunima and Susmita Kar from the foundation examined the lake, which is home to several turtle species, most notably the Bostami turtles — a critically endangered species according to the IUCN.
The Bostami turtles, also known as black soft-shell turtles, are freshwater species found in limited locations in India and Bangladesh. In Tripura, they hold deep religious significance, as they inhabit the sacred lake of the temple. Devotees believe that glimpsing and feeding the turtles is a vital part of the temple ritual.
Recognising both the ecological and cultural value of the species, the state government has sanctioned Rs 14.90 lakh for a year-long scientific study. The project will focus on improving the life expectancy of the turtles, creating a more supportive habitat, and conducting a detailed census.
The District Magistrate informed reporters that egg hatching typically coincides with the onset of monsoon, and the newborn turtles are carefully monitored before being released into the lake. The visit was also a preparatory step ahead of the upcoming tour by the Turtle Survival Alliance Foundation.
The project is being jointly implemented by the Forest Department, District Administration, and the Fisheries Department.
