Gopal Roy addresses letter to CM , TPYC file complaint to THRC against attack on Shahjahan Islam’s house and arrest of his father and brother

Former PCC president and incumbent Congress MLA Gopal Roy has filed a letter to the chief minister Dr Manik Saha protesting against the vandalation of the residence of state Youth Congress vice president Shahjahan Islam and physical assault on his family members including women on the night of June 8 by a large group of BJP workers and supporters. Demanding drastic action against the ‘hooligans’ who had stormed Shahjahan Islam’s residence and assaulted his family members including his newborn child, Gopal Roy said that the way in which the BJP miscreants had tried to attack the PCC president Asish Kumar Saha and senior MLA Sudip Roybarman who had reached the area to visit Shahjahan’s ransacked residence was totally ‘anti-democratic and reprehensible’. Roy also expressed amazement over the arrest of Shahjahan’s old father and brother in connection with the incident in which they were the victims. Why were not the attackers on Shahjahan’s house not arrested , he asked.

Stating that undesirable comments by any person in social media is under the purview of legal provisions under the Cyber Crime act and the person’s can not be ransacked and his family members can not be assaulted under law. He also urged upon the chief minister to order an investigation into the shameful incident and take measures to punish the attackers.

Meanwhile the Tripura Pradesh Youth Congress (TPYC) has filed a complaint with the chairman of the Tripura Human Rights Commission (THRC) to intervene in the matter and conduct an inqury. According to the copy of the letter addressed by the state Youth Congress president Neel Kamal Saha, the residence of TPYC vice president Shahjahan Islam had been vandalised by BJP workers and supporters who had also assaulted the family members of Shahjahan in a condemnable manner. Neel Kamal Saha also stated that the father and brother of Shahjahan Islam had been arrested by police without any rhyme or reason even though they had nothing to do with the social media comment made by Shahjahan that had provoked the trouble. The TPYC letter also said that the BJP storm troopers of Shanti Paran area are now trying to force the family of Shahjahan Islam to leave their residential area. Neel Kamal Saha has sought urgent intervention of the THRC into the incident to save the family of Shahjahan Islam from displacement and the family members from assault.
