BJP holds massive protest, meets SP West seeking Sahajahan's arrest

The BJP on Monday staged a large protest rally in Agartala demanding the immediate arrest of Congress leader Sahajahan Islam. The rally, held under tight security, passed through key city roads, including Post Office Chowmuhani, where the Congress headquarters is located. The BJP leaders condemned Sahajahan’s recent social media post criticising the Chief Minister and others in connection with tensions over cow slaughter during Bakra Eid.

A BJP delegation, led by Sadar District President Ashim Bhattacharjee, met Superintendent of Police (West Tripura) Kiran Kumar K, urging swift action against Sahajahan. Bhattacharjee said Islam’s remarks were derogatory, communally charged, and disrespectful towards Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha and other officials. He emphasised the CM’s role as a respected doctor and development-oriented leader.

Bhattacharjee added that despite provocation, BJP workers exercised restraint even after bricks were allegedly thrown at them. An FIR was filed at 3 a.m. demanding strict punishment for Sahajahan to prevent communal unrest.

Meanwhile, police arrested Sahajahan’s father and brother, Najrul and Khairul Islam. Search operations are ongoing to apprehend Sahajahan, police sources confirmed.
