The Udaipur district Congress unit today organised a protest demonstration against the attack on and vandalisation of the residence of party leader Shahjahan Islam in Agartala’s Shantipara area last night. A protest rally led by Gomati district Congress president Titon Paul had first assembled in front of the party office in Jamtala area and then marched towards the Radha Kishorepur police station and demonstrated to register their protest. Speaking to media persons Titon Paul said that party leader Shajahan Islam had made comments in social media against the chief minister and on this excuse a large group of unruly BJP supporters had vandalised his residence last night . Besides , he pointed that the BJP workers and activists had created trouble on the day of ‘Bakri Eid’ in Raj Nagar area of Udaipur on the issue of cow slaughter and had attacked people belonging to the minority community indiscriminately . He asserted that the Congress will launch statewide protests against this.
Meanwhile at Agartala’s Congress Bhawan the PCC president Asish Kumar Saha and senior MLA Sudip Roybarman also protested the attack on party leader Shahjahan Islam’s house and the arrest of his old father in his absence . Shahjahan Islam is reportedly absconding . “Yesterday we were on the point of being attacked in Shanti Para area but the police took timely action to prevent this ; we also have nothing to say on what Shahjajan Islam commented on social media but the attack on his house and vandalisation is indefensible” said Sudip and Asish . They said that people of the state have now their backs to the wall and there will be statewide protests against the misdeeds and goonery of BJP workers, condemning the physical assault on the old father of Shahjahan Islam. Sudip and Asish said that they will bring the matter to the notice of the all India leadership of the party.
The CPI (M) state secretary Jiten Chowdhury has also condemned the attack on the residence of Congress leader Shahjahan Islam last night and vandalisation of the entire residence. He said that people of the state will not tolerate this and there will be protests across the state.
