The Tripura government is exploring a long-term resettlement plan for residents living in flood-prone areas, especially along the Haora riverbanks in Agartala. Mayor of Agartala Municipal Corporation Dipak Majumder revealed that Chief Minister Manik Saha has expressed concern over recurring floods and supports relocating vulnerable families under a permanent housing scheme.

Speaking in a recent interview, Majumder said, “Relocation is the only sustainable solution for residents repeatedly affected by floods. We’re identifying high-risk zones to move people into safer housing.”

To address urban flooding, the city has increased the number of water pumps from 12 to 17, with three more in the pipeline. Covered drainage systems with enhanced capacity are also being developed for faster rainwater discharge. The Mayor stressed that public participation is essential, citing issues like tax evasion and improper waste disposal as major contributors to clogged drains.

In parallel, the city has intensified mosquito control measures. “We’ve cleaned over 60 water bodies and are procuring more fogging machines. The budget for vector control has gone up fivefold,” he added.

Majumder noted that recent drainage upgrades are already showing results, with stagnant water clearing faster than before, reducing the impact of heavy rains.
