A powerful and controversial speech delivered by social thinker and senior intellectual Chitta Maharaj in 2023 has resurfaced on social media for the las two days, once again triggering widespread discussions across Tripura. The video, now circulating rapidly across Facebook, WhatsApp, and other platforms, contains strong remarks about the historical role of Tripura’s 184 kings and a sharp critique of current Tipra Motha leadership.

In the viral clip, Chitta Maharaj alleged that the 184 kings of Tripura used the indigenous Tiprasa people merely for their own luxury and comfort, without making any real effort to educate or empower them. He stated, “The kings never established educational systems for the Tiprasa common people. All facilities were reserved only for the royal relatives and close allies.”

Further in his speech, Chitta Maharaj credited legendary Communist leader Dasarath Deb for initiating mass education among the Tiprasa community. “It was only Dasarath Deb who opened schools in the villages and brought education to the grassroots Tiprasa society,” he remarked.

Taking direct aim at Tipra Motha chairman Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma, Chitta Maharaj said, “Pradyot Babu, who doesn’t know history, keeps shouting that nothing was done in the 1970s by the Tripura government. The Tiprasa people now want to know what did your 184 royal ancestors do for them?”

The speech also highlights issues like the use of tax revenues collected from Tiprasa subjects to build lavish structures like the royal palace and Neermahal, while keeping the community in darkness and illiteracy. He also criticised recent political developments by terming the ‘interlocutor’ process as a new form of deception: “Now a new drama has begun in the name of interlocutor, trying to fool the people again,” he said.

The re-emergence of this video comes at a time when their youth front YTF demanding suspension of TK Chakma who is a direct recruited IAS from their own community and debates over tribal rights, autonomy, and historical justice are again heating up in Tripura. The speech has drawn mixed reactions online — while many are praising Chitta Maharaj for boldly speaking historical truths, others have criticised the tone of his comments as divisive.

Pradyot Kishore is traveling to London presently,

Tipra Motha or any royal family members have not yet issued a formal response to the viral video as of the filing of this report.

This renewed circulation of Chitta Maharaj’s fiery speech has reignited a vital debate: How much of today’s tribal struggles are rooted in the negligence of past rulers, and how much can be addressed through present-day politics and leadership?
