In the aftermath of the controversial lockdown protest at the Gomati District Headquarters in Udaipur on May 2, the Tripura Home Department has taken decisive administrative action. Gomati District Superintendent of Police (SP) Namit Pathak, IPS, and Additional SP Souvik Dey, TPS, have been removed from their posts and directed to report to the state police headquarters immediately.

The SP of Sepahijala District, Shri Bijay Debbarma, IPS has been given additional charge of SP Gomati. The decision comes amid growing criticism over the police’s alleged failure to prevent the large scale disruption caused by members of the Youth Tipra Federation (YTF), the youth wing of the Tipra Motha party.

According to eyewitnesses and local sources, YTF activists successfully enforced a complete lockdown of the Gomati District civil administrative complex, including the SDM and BDO offices of the District which has been described as an unprecedented event in Tripura’s administrative history. Critics have called the response of the district police “unprofessional” and “negligent,” asserting that their mishandling allowed the Tipra Motha backed protest to gain national attention and cause embarrassment for the state government.

Meanwhile, political tensions have intensified further as the YTF issued a strong ultimatum demanding the suspension of Gomati District Magistrate T.K. Chakma, IAS. Speaking at a press conference held at Chandra Mahal in Agartala, YTF President Suraj Debbarma warned of a statewide agitation if their demand is not met within seven days.

> “We are giving the government seven days to suspend the Gomati DM, failing which we will call a statewide bandh,” said Suraj Debbarma. “This is no longer a request for transfer. It is a demand for suspension.

The YTF leaders are calling this a “prestige battle” and have vowed not to remain silent if the state government fails to respond. As of now, no official response has been issued by the Chief Minister’s Office or the Home Department regarding the YTF ultimatum.
