In a shocking incident that has stirred public outrage across Tripura, a Bolero vehicle belonging to the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Bishalgarh Women Police Station, Shiuli Das, was hijacked in broad daylight by a group of miscreants from the busy Bishalgarh Hospital Chowmuhani area yesterday afternoon. The vehicle was being driven by the official driver and had no other occupants at the time.
Eyewitnesses reported that two men initially intercepted the vehicle near Bishalgarh hospital Chowmuhani, forcibly snatched the keys from the driver, and physically assaulted him. Moments later, two more youths arrived on a scooter, and together, the four managed to drive away with the police vehicle.
Following the incident, the Additional Superintendent of Police rushed to the spot, but as of the latest reports, no trace of the hijackers has been found. The hijacking of a police vehicle in broad daylight, and that too of a senior officer, has created panic and disbelief among residents, raising serious questions about the state of law and order in Bishalgarh and beyond.
Shockingly, this was not the only incident of the day highlighting police failures. In another troubling event, a notorious dacoit managed to escape from Dharmanagar Police Custody while being taken to court. Though the criminal was later re-arrested, the escape during official escort duty has raised concerns about police negligence.
Adding to the day’s chaos, a vegetable vendor and his son were attacked and injured on the Bishalgarh-Agartala road while returning home after selling land and carrying 11 lakh in cash. A group of youths ambushed them and looted over 11 lakh in the brutal robbery.
These back-to-back incidents, police vehicle hijacking, prisoner escape, and highway robbery have provoked sharp criticism of the state’s law enforcement system. Citizens are questioning the effectiveness of the police, asking why taxpayers’ money should be used to pay salaries to an administration that seems to be asleep at the wheel.
"Are the police sleeping with oil in their noses?" asked a local resident in anger. "Why are such crimes becoming routine in Bishalgarh? Even the DM’s office in Udaipur was locked in front of the SP. What more evidence is needed to see the state of collapse?"
Many are left wondering: Is it believable that such crimes can repeatedly occur if the administration is truly alert? Or is this a reflection of a deeper breakdown in Tripura’s policing and governance?
As the state reels under growing insecurity, citizens await strong action and accountability from the administration.
